Recipe: Hiway Soup with Macaroni

So what does a guy do when he's hungry at 3:30am? Head over to the fridge… but there's nothing useful. Instant noodles? Out of stock!

Half a pack of macaroni? Check.
Soy sauce? Check.
Vinegar? Check.
Oregano, dried basil, coriander and curry leaves? Check.
Dried french beans, carrots? Check.
Garlic powder, white sesame seeds? Check.
Salt, ajinomoto? Check.
Oil, corn flour? Check!
Enough already!
Oh and water… of course Check!

Set up your kitchen, with the eeePC running tweetdeck via wifi, so you don't miss anything on the excruciatingly slow twitter timeline (early hours, ~20 tweets an hour, but still…) also keep your phone handy, in case you get an important call. Yeah right! But still!

Now boil some water, add a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of oil and drop the macaroni in it, let it boil a while…

Now for the soup.

Boil two cups of water, put the stove on slow/simmer.

Keep stirring often. Now while you do this, follow the next instructions, also keep checking the macaroni if it is ready.

Add half a teaspoon of salt and a few grains of ajinomoto.
Drop the dried carrots and beans into it, followed by oregano, basil, coriander and curry leaves, a pinch each.
Now add a tiny pinch of garlic powder and a large pinch of white sesame seeds.
Add in half a teaspoon of vinegar and one full teaspoon of soy sauce. Maybe more soy sauce depending on your taste, or lack of it. ;-)

Now mix a heaped teaspoon of corn flour in a small bowl of cold water, remove all lumps.
Slowly pour it into the soup while you stir continuously.

Let simmer for two minutes, then you're done with the soup.

In the meanwhile, macaroni will be ready… soft and bouncy.
Strain it.

Now serve yourself… first the macaroni.

Then, soup.

Your Hiway soup is ready!

It definitely tasted great… I referred to no recipe book, nor have I made any soup before. Ever.

This was purely a desperate experiment to feed myself, which turned out pretty good!

And yes, just to keep my lawyers happy: I'm not responsible if you manage to harm yourself or others in any way while following this guide. Use common sense ;-)

Eh, sorry for the extremely blurry pictures… I'm too hungry to wake up my dSLR :-P

Note: you can also use this recipe to make a single pack of maggi serve almost two people, add some more water and spices to taste ;-)
